For thousands of years, warriors have often personalized their weapons. In the 20th century, this personalization was often done to military planes on the front fuselage, or 'nose', of the aircraft, thus the term, "Nose Art". Sometimes this artwork was meant to invoke fear in the enemy, such as the vicious shark teeth on the Flying Tigers' airplanes. Other artwork evoked admiration for the aircraft they flew, or a pin up girl representing a love back home (or a love they wish they had!). This artwork was often not only on the plane, but on the leather jackets and other personal effects of both the pilot and the other crewmen.
